Although we are still unable to meet en masse, a number of groups and the monthly meetings are online with Zoom.
See below for the schedule.
Our Schedule of monthly member meetings, all via Zoom:-
May 6th: Cops and Notebooks with James Ellson.
Starting in London as a policeman and then working out of Cheadle Hulme Police station before some time spent in Moss Side and then becoming a Detective Inspector. Now an author and managing a small holding in the Peak District.
June 3rd: Lord Horatio Nelson: Art and Artefacts with Dr James Taylor.
Lord Horatio Nelson may have been short in stature, but he was tall in deeds and his death on the deck of his flagship HMS Victory ensured his enduring popularity. This charismatic and contradictory character is examined through paintings drawings and prints, and a small number of period artefacts.
Dr Taylor gave us an amusing and informative talk in December on The Forgotten Art of the Picture Postcard.
July 1st: The Countryside Detective with Stephen Powles
Country walks can be greatly enhanced if one has a knowledge of the signs left by animals and where to look for them. This talk will illustrate numerous examples, some common and some more unusual and some that you are likely to pass by without ever having given them much thought. The use of field craft, camera traps and CCTV monitoring will also be explored.
August 5th: Mad, Bad and Dangerous with Tim Barney
Military Ideas & Inventions That Didn’t Make the Grade
This entertaining talk is about military ideas, inventions and operations that in one way or another, failed to make the grade. Incompetence, haste and wishful thinking have all played their part, in some of the most scandalous failures in military history.
Meetings in September and onwards – we are hoping that we will be able to meet in person again but this will depend on Government guidance.
The International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival is back in Buxton and Harrogate in August, 2021.
Following the COVID cancellation of last year’s Gilbert & Sullivan merriment, the International G&S Festival is back. It opens on Saturday 31 July until Saturday 7 August at Buxton Opera House, before moving to The Royal Hall, Harrogate from Sunday 8 August until Wednesday 18 August.
