In September 2001, a meeting of over 90 Third-Agers met in Cheadle Hulme to discuss the formation of a new U3A branch and seven volunteered their services as group leaders.
The first quarterly newsletter was issued early in 2002 and, within a year, membership had grown to around 200. In December 2011, we celebrated our 10th anniversary with our 20th anniversary in 2021.
At the core of our U3A activities is the members’ meeting, which has previously been held at St. Andrew’s Parish Church on Cheadle Road on the first Thursday of each month commencing at 2 p.m., and which served a valuable social function in bringing all the Groups together. However, due to the current restrictions, all our meetings are now being held online using the Zoom platform. We are still a lively group but now over the internet.
Since U3A Learning and Activity Groups are independent co-operatives, the monthly meeting provides an opportunity for the Committee and Group Leaders to make announcements and pass on information to the membership as a whole. The monthly meeting has also brought us guest speakers on a wide range of interesting subjects.
