The Family History Group meets generally on the last Friday in the month at a venue arranged month by month depending upon the subject to be talked about.
Its purpose is for members to help one another, particularly if beginners, to learn where to find information and which documents they could look at. This may be through the Internet or when visiting Record Offices or Family History Centres such as Libraries.
Some of the group have been collecting information relating to the men who are commemorated on the Cheadle Hulme War Memorial. We have looked at their family backgrounds in an attempt to understand the social conditions in the village, and changes in employment and leisure pursuits from 1841 to 1901 in particular. Census material and references found through Stockport Library and other sources have been used. In Autumn 2009 a booklet "85 Heroes" was produced. These have been selling well, with profits donated to S.S.A.F.A. Copies are still available (£2).
Anyone who is interested in joining this Group will be welcome and can contact either Gillian or Judith or introduce themselves to either at the general CH U3A monthly meetings held at Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church.
